Raised Bog Restoration project

Peat Bogs

The project steers a journey through the flora and fauna of the Irish Peatlands, and the associated  talks and workshops highlight the importance of this habitat and the degradation it has  undergone since Mary was finding such wonder in it .
The bogs have been exploited for centuries and contain many unique species of plants and insects  It is an environment with as much importance as the Rain Forests, and in as urgent need of protection.

Raised bogs have played a key role in Irish culture for centuries, and have played a magical role in science and discovery.
Mary Ward was born in Ferbane, surrounded by the Midland Bogs. Ferbane Bog is now an important SAC site under the stewardship of the Living Bog Project and we are highlighting the importance of conservation.
